About the employer

KU Leuven is an autonomous university. It was founded in 1425. It was born of and has grown within the Catholic tradition.
(ref. ZAP-2021-118)
You will develop a research program of international quality and strive for excellent research output, including publications in reputable, international and peer-reviewed academic journals, active participation in international conferences, and through other forms of professional science communication. Your empirical research is situated in the broad field of strategic communication, i.e. the well-considered use of communication by organizations (such as commercial firms, non-profit organizations, governmental institutions and NGOs) in achieving their objectives. In terms of theoretical framework and methodology, you will opt for a social science perspective to look at different organizations that use (digital) media internally and externally in the relationship with their stakeholders. It is a prerequisite that your own research fits within IMS, which is possible by strongly focusing on new research lines that are highly complementary to the current research within the unit and/or by connecting more closely to the unit’s current research lines, in order to reinforce it. Within the strategically made choices for research, you have a clear vision of how to build and expand your own research program, including the approach to acquire competitive funding in various ways.

Duties
Research
You will develop a research program of international quality and strive for excellent research output, including publications in reputable, international and peer-reviewed academic journals, active participation in international conferences, and through other forms of professional science communication.

Your empirical research is situated in the broad field of strategic communication, i.e. the well-considered use of communication by organizations (such as commercial firms, non-profit organizations, governmental institutions and NGOs) in achieving their objectives. In terms of theoretical framework and methodology, you will opt for a social science perspective to look at different organizations that use (digital) media internally and externally in the relationship with their stakeholders.

Within the strategically made choices for research, you have a clear vision of how to build and expand your own research program, including the approach to acquire competitive funding in various ways.

Education
The two research units oriented towards communication science, IMS and SMCR, are jointly responsible for the organization of the Bachelor and Master in Communication Sciences, the English-language Master in Digital Media and Society, the Master in Business Communication and the Master in Journalism. Your teaching assignment will include both theoretical and methodological courses in Communication Science in general and Strategic Communication in particular. Depending on your areas of expertise, there will be a mutual agreement as to where they can best be put to use, primarily within the Master in Business Communication, which the Faculty of Social Sciences organizes in close cooperation with the Faculty of Arts, and the 'strategy and organization' track within the Master in Communication Sciences. In any case, the assignment includes a course related to corporate communication and if relevant, internal communication. You will also supervise theses of Master students and PhD students.

You are easily to deploy in a Bachelor and Master Program, as a result of your profound knowledge of and insight in the social sciences, media sociology and media psychology.

You have strong didactic skills and provide high-quality education, with a clear commitment to the quality of the academic program as a whole. You develop your education in accordance with KU Leuven's vision on activating and research-based education.

Service
You are prepared to provide scientific, societal and internal services. This manifests itself, for instance, in a constructive contribution to education and research as partly collective projects of a team (e.g. through participation in meetings, teacher days, information sessions, recruitment activities, exchange programs).

Profile
Applicants hold a PhD in social sciences or an equivalent diploma. We are looking for a researcher with a broad theoretical knowledge, a multidisciplinary interest and a strong background in social scientific research methods. Your research file testifies to excellence in several areas. This is evident, for example, from the quality of your doctoral research, publications with a high impact and acquired research funding. We highly value professional behavior and collegiality and expect you to cooperate closely with the members of the research group as well as interdisciplinary with other research groups within KU Leuven. You have an extensive international network and/or are willing to develop this further within the context of the research unit.

You have excellent teaching skills and preferably experience in teaching for large and small groups.
The official administrative language of KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not know Dutch or know Dutch insufficiently at the time of recruitment, KU Leuven will provide language training that should allow you to participate in administrative meetings.

Before teaching in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to acquire the required knowledge of Dutch or English respectively.
Offer
We offer full-time employment in an intellectually challenging and international environment. You will work in Leuven, a historic and at the same time dynamic and lively city in the heart of Belgium, twenty minutes away from Brussels, and less than two hours from Paris, London and Amsterdam.

You will be appointed as a tenure track professor for a period of 5 years, after which, in the event of a positive evaluation, you are permanently appointed as associate professor. Immediately upon starting you will be able to independently develop your own line of research, serve as a supervisor of dissertations, and raise your own research funding.

To facilitate scientific integration and research in the first phase, start-up funding of €100,000 is offered to new professors who do not have substantial other funding (e.g. ERC).

KU Leuven is well equipped to welcome foreign professors and their families and offers practical support in the areas of immigration and administration, housing, childcare, Dutch learning, partner career coaching, etc.
