The role

We are seeking an enthusiastic intern to assess and analyze water usage and disposal practices at our shipyards within the Damen group. The intern will be responsible for developing a comprehensive plan to effectively measure, reduce, and optimize both water consumption and disposal processes, ensuring compliance with upcoming regulations and meeting environmental expectations. This internship aims to:

  • Ensure reliable and efficient reporting of water usage and disposal data across all shipyards, facilitating accurate tracking, monitoring, and benchmarking of progress.
  • Establish the necessary conditions to set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) at both group and individual yard levels, providing a framework for measuring and evaluating water reduction and circularity efforts.
  • Apply circularity principles to minimize wastewater generation and explore innovative solutions for wastewater treatment and reuse, aiming to achieve a closed-loop system and minimize environmental impact.
  • Provide support to individual shipyards in developing their own water reduction and circularity plans and objectives, ensuring alignment with overarching sustainability goals and targets.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including local authorities and environmental organizations, to stay updated on upcoming regulations and incorporate them into the water management strategy.
  • Identify and implement best practices and technological advancements that enhance water efficiency, such as water-saving equipment, rainwater harvesting, and water recycling systems.
  • Regularly communicate with shipyards to offer assistance and guidance in implementing their water reduction and circularity plans, sharing knowledge, and facilitating collaboration among yards.
  • Generate accurate and comprehensive reports on water usage, disposal practices, progress, and achievements, enabling effective tracking, monitoring, and reporting of sustainability performance at both group and individual yard levels.

Key accountabilities

  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of water usage and disposal practices within shipyards, identifying areas of high consumption and inefficiencies (at least 3 locations in NL).
  • Collect and analyze data on water usage and disposal specific to our shipyards, including wastewater generation and treatment processes.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, such as facility managers and environmental specialists, to gather insights and information on current water management practices. • Develop a detailed plan outlining actionable strategies and initiatives to measure and reduce water consumption and optimize water disposal processes.
  • Explore circularity principles to minimize wastewater generation and investigate opportunities for wastewater treatment and reuse within shipyard operations.
  • Support individual shipyards in developing their water reduction and circularity plans, providing guidance, and assisting in aligning with overarching sustainability goals.
  • Identify and evaluate innovative technologies and practices that enhance water efficiency and promote circularity, such as water-saving equipment, rainwater harvesting, and water recycling systems.
  • Foster knowledge sharing and collaboration among shipyards, organizing workshops or sharing platforms to exchange successful water reduction and circularity practices.

Skills & experience

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in the field of Environmental Law, Sustainability or similar programs.
  • Passion for sustainability is key!
  • Analytical skills
  • Able to work in a team – together with other departments
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail and ability to multitask
