Java Developer
Multimodal Language Department
full-time
The Multimodal Language Department at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is offering a Java Developer position.
Job description
We are seeking an experienced Java developer to join our team of software developers to further develop and maintain and extend the desktop application ELAN.ELAN is an application for annotation of audio and video recordings. It is not only used within the MPI but is applied worldwide in research projects in (mainly) linguistics. It is being developed in the context of The Language Archive, the archive of the MPI comprising a huge and comprehensive set of data resulting from linguistic research. The archive and ELAN can be found here:
.
ELAN has a history of almost 20 years with on average 3 to 4 updates per year. During that time, it has grown into a fairly large independent application with only a limited level of modularity.
The new developer will primarily focus on necessary extensions that will enable ELAN to connect to and interoperate with relevant local and online platforms for automatic recognition of various types of events in video recordings. Smooth integration of results must be designed and implemented.
The ideal candidate will both have an interest in developing desktop applications with a graphical user interface, and in web technology, including the client side of it. Functional demands will be translated into working, user friendly application components, often in close collaboration with users of the software. The successful candidate will enjoy contributing to the design and implementation of a new, modular architecture for existing and new functionality and to do so in a research environment with many international colleagues.
