What will you do?

As Team Lead Product Development for our energy storage systems you will manage a team of Product Development Engineers working on Alfen's energy storage system (ESS). ESS balances supply and demand in energy, helping to avoid extreme infrastructure investments in the power grid. Self-generated energy can be sold at the most profitable times and autonomous power grids based on solar or wind power will be enabled. Energy storage systems are already being used by utilities, grid operators, large and small energy producers and traders, electric vehicle fast charging service providers and industrial enterprises.

Within this team, you will fulfill the role of manager, but also collaborate on day-to-day operations. The department currently consists of six engineers, working together to innovate the energy storage system of the future. In this role, you will outline future plans and ensure further professionalization and expansion of the department. As a team lead you will work together with our project managers, the team leads of other departments, various R&D employees, colleagues from the production and QHSE departments and you will be reporting to the Manager Product Development Engineering. To get a more complete picture of the position, here are some of the main duties:

Management & Organization:

• Leading the team and ensuring optimal allocation of employees to projects/subsystems in close cooperation with the lead engineer;
• Prioritizing and organizing work, paying attention to capacity and availability of team members, as well as monitoring the progress of projects;
• Supervise, coach and motivate employees to achieve targets and output;
• Conducting periodic targets, performance and assessment interviews and advising on terms and conditions of employment;
• Setting down the strategy of the department and goals for team members;
• Ensuring a proper communication structure and coordination between teams and departments, and identifying training needs for employees.

Guidance & Engineering:

• Function as a technical sparring partner and guide technical discussions;
• Maintain contact with other teams and external parties to discuss technical and organizational matters;
• Optimizing the knowledge and skills present within the team to meet the requirements set;
• Participating in the development of solutions, e.g. launching new products and improving existing products. 

Continuous improvement:

• Analyze processes and make recommendations for the purpose of increasing efficiency and cost savings;
• Initiate and implement process improvements and associated tools, including leading implementation projects for changes in processes and practices.

In this position, you will work within our R&D department. We are proud of the fact that we are developing all of our innovative products in-house. This gives us clout, flexibility and strong distinctiveness. In our R&D department we work on the innovations that will shape the energy landscape of the future. We have specialized teams in software, electrical engineering, power electronics and product development engineering. By bringing these disciplines together, Alfen is able to move quickly to bring unique new concepts and products to the market and implement product improvements.

What do we ask of you?

• Are in possession of a college or university degree, preferably in mechanical engineering (or in combination with Industrial Design);
• Have experience in multidisciplinary product development;
• Have command of the Dutch and English language, both verbally and in writing;
• Have experience in environments that combine processes, commerce, people, technology and project delivery.
