What will be your role?

Hydrogen (H2) economy can bring the radical step for realizing the energy transition towards a low carbon future. H2 is currently used in petrochemical refining, polymerization and fertilizer production. In future, H2 can be potentially used for many new applications such as energy supply in industrial and residential areas, transportation, combustion gas and chemical production. However, the current method of the production of H2 is one of the major sources of carbon emissions in the industry. In future, H2 is expected to be produced either by a route with simultaneous capture of produced CO2 (blue H2) or by a route with elimination of the produced CO2 (green H2). Eventually, supporting a parallel economy on its own, the H2 economy. At TNO, we are investigating the use of molten metals for the production of green and blue H2.

Your challenge will be to experimentally test this novel technology, scale up and design of a conceptual process and perform a techno-economic comparison with existing technologies. The existing technologies will include steam methane reforming, plasma pyrolysis of methane and water splitting. The overall result of your project will contribute towards the identification of valorization opportunities of blue and green H2 in the low carbon future of the process industry in the Netherlands.

How do you want to contribute to tomorrow's world? How big can your impact be? Come and work at TNO and envision it.

What we expect from you

  • Background in chemical or process engineering.
  • Interest in experimental validation, conceptual process design and techno-economic comparison.
  • The ideal duration of the project is 9 months, but there are possibilities for shorter (3 to 6 months) projects as well.
