Paul van Helden - Employee Development Department
Paul has been working in the development division at Cimar Electronics since 2018. As a true electronic engineer, he is now in his element at Cimar, after a couple of excursions into both hardware and software development, and he is really enjoying working in a small-scale development team. The variety of the work is what most appeals to him: the contact with the client, the intensive collaboration with the other developers in the division, the involvement in the whole project right through to production and, of course, the ever-changing questions from clients which constantly challenge him to devise new solutions.Paul has known Cimar since just after the turn of the century, when Cimar was producing electronic products for the company that he worked for at that time. That was also in a development division, just as now at Cimar. Of course, the technologies used have changed considerably over the years. For example, in the products that we are currently developing at Cimar there is much more use of wireless technology, such as Bluetooth, ZigBee, LoRa and WiFi.
His HTS electronic engineering diploma still dates from the time when not so many microcontrollers were used as now, some 30 years later. Developing with a microcontroller or with mini- computers like the Raspberry Pi is also much more efficient than the separate components and a load of ICs. However, this does mean that the work of an electronic engineer involves a lot more programming work nowadays. But that is part of what makes the job so interesting and varied. You don't just make a design, a diagram and a PCB for a client; but also software and firmware, and you get involved in the various inspections that often have to be performed.
Above all, Paul is keen to talk about the fascinating, challenging development projects, and he characterises Cimar Electronics as a very fresh organisation: the communication lines are short, the collaboration with colleagues works smoothly and naturally, and there is also space as a development division to really be able to 'develop'. In addition, it is great to work at the new location; everything has been thought through, there is much more space and everything is new, modern and provided for down to the smallest detail. In his element, he can see himself working here for years to come!
