‘When I read about the job opening at the UvH, my first thought was: this is for me’
‘As a sociologist of education, my main areas of interest are well-being, technology, and public pedagogy. These align well with the UvH, where colleagues do research on flourishing, existential meaning-making, citizenship, and address questions on morality. In addition to my ongoing research, I have taught two courses at the UvH up to now: citizenship and moral education, and an introduction to ethics.

Furthermore, I am also collaborating with a university in Mumbai, India, where we are doing a teaching collaboration between students at the two universities. Together, we will study and compare the critical issues around educational technology in Europe and India.

I chose for the UvH first and foremost because I found a strong resonance between my research interests and what the university stands for. My training is in sociology, but I am interested in philosophy, cultural anthropology, and history as well. When I read about the job opening, my first thought was: this is for me. Before moving to the Netherlands, I used to work in the United States, and I have heard several universities talking about multi-disciplinarity, but it often remained just talk. Thanks to its small scale and organization into chair groups, multidisciplinary approaches fit well at the UvH, and some colleagues are doing fascinating multidisciplinary work.

Although the UvH is a largely Dutch and Dutch-speaking university, people have adapted surprisingly quickly to a non-Dutch staff member. Colleagues have been extremely helpful and kind, switching quickly to English and translating for me where needed. My hope is to become fluent enough for having a proper conversation with my colleagues in Dutch.

Coming to another country and working in one’s non-native environment requires an effort from both sides. You need to be willing to invest time and energy in learning new things about a new place. To me it seems obvious, when I am in a new place, I am curious to find out how people think and what the cultural norms are. At the same time, the UvH is very accommodating. I truly feel welcome.’
