Dümmen Orange is the world’s largest breeder and propagator of cut flowers, bulbs, tropical plants, pot plants, bedding plants and perennials. For our Research department in De Lier we are looking for a Technology Lead Trait Genetics.

Job objective

As a Technology Lead Trait Genetics you will play an essential role in contributing to the Research and Development strategy and be responsible for your mission-critical research domains. You will lead the Trait Genetics cluster which consists of (Quantitative) Genetics, Computer Vision and Plant Health and Molecular Diagnostics research programs. The cluster collaborates with breeding and research teams through their expertise on the development of predictive breeding tools for traits with a complex and simple genetic basis, the development of plant health and molecular diagnostic methods as well as the development of algorithms and tools to apply image analysis for relevant traits for our crops. The cluster consists of both Technology Development and Technology Application teams.

Projects in which members of the Trait Genetics team play a key role are for example focusing on:
  • Identifying sources of resistance, revealing the underlying genetics, thoroughly validating the trait and developing molecular markers;
  • Developing software solutions for the automation of quantitative genetic analyses and facilitating optimal breeding decisions;
  • Developing automated genotype analysis pipelines and database solutions for routine application of high throughput genotyping;
  • Integrate and apply genomic prediction methods in prebreeding and breeding programs;
  • Developing pipelines for automated image analysis;
  • Developing molecular screening methods of pathogen identification.
Collaboration and people leadership are important features of the job. You will work closely with the Technology Leads for the Trait Exploration and Plant Life Cycle clusters and you will provide functional and direct leadership to help your colleagues grow. You will also work closely with the Breeding Managers to ensure optimal implementation of Quantitative Genetics within their breeding programs. You will be based in our Breeding Technology Centre in de Lier where you will report to the Research Director.

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of research strategies with clear business objectives.
  • Develop mid-term strategy for Trait Genetics in line with the long-term R&D strategy.
  • Translate business objectives into goal-oriented annual research plans for your own domain.
  • Direct and execute research domain plans and contribute to the implementation of output within breeding, R&D operations and supply chain.
  • Provide functional and direct leadership to researchers and breeders.
  • Expand our intellectual property position.
  • Provide guidance and support for research projects throughout the project lifecycle as part of the project steering teams.
  • Strengthen the knowledge base of the company and expand our freedom to operate position.
  • Collaborate with Technology Leads. Global Product Managers and Breeding Managers and Directors to stay aligned with future market requirements and smart adoption of novel technologies, traits and breeding operating systems.

Your profile

  • PhD in a relevant discipline (such as Genetics, Quantitative Genetics, Plant Breeding, Plant Sciences) and >5 years work experience, preferably in an industry setting.
  • Demonstrated strategic skills and business acumen.
  • Proven leadership skills and experience.
  • An intrinsic focus on collaboration is a must as well as flexible, cross-cultural and cross-functional communication skills.
  • Inquisitive, innovative and critical mind-set and a creative and pro-active attitude.
