Job description
Are you interested in contributing to a dynamic group of (medical) physicists, engineers, radiation oncologists, and therapists that aims to improve the treatment of prostate and cervix cancer? Are you technically and clinically minded? Would a Postdoc research project within an academic medical center and industry partnership interest you?If you have answered yes to these questions, Erasmus MC Cancer Institute – Department of Radiotherapy is now accepting applications for a research position in close cooperation with an industrial partner to develop, validate and introduce a novel (pre)treatment verification strategy for high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy. Therefore, a prototype device is available consisting of advanced electromagnetic tracking for 3D positioning and orientation integrated in a state-of-the-art HDR brachytherapy remote afterloader.
The research position will involve clinical validation of the prototype device, development of measurement and evaluation tools, as well as clinical implementation of this novel pretreatment verification strategy in daily prostate and cervix HDR brachytherapy. You will have the lead in acquiring, analysing and interpreting of data, writing scientific articles and communicating study results at relevant national and international conferences.

On a yearly basis, more than 5.500 patients are treated for mainly oncological diseases. In the next two years four state-of-the-art treatment machines will be installed, allowing the daily delivery of on-line adaptive radiotherapy for large patient cohorts. The department has an extensive and renowned research program in the field of high-precision adaptive radiotherapy, automated treatment plan optimization, robotic radiotherapy, molecular radiobiology, hyperthermia, and proton therapy. Together with LUMC and TU Delft, the department participates in HollandPTC. The division of Medical Physics has about 55 employees, including 16 medical physicists and 4 medical physicists in training.
Qualifications and skills
You are a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in (Applied) Physics, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Technical Medicine or a related discipline. You are an ambitious, result-driven and excellent team player. You have a pragmatic and translational research mind-set and you are able to communicate well across disciplines and levels of experience. Experience with research in radiation oncology will be an advantage. You should be fluent in English; knowledge of the Dutch language is preferred. Terms of employment
- You will receive a temporary position for 2 years.
- The gross monthly salary amounts a maximum of € 4800,- (scale 10), depending on your level of education and relevant experience, based on a full-time working week of 36 hours.
- Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and an individual travel expense package.
- Pension insurance with ABP, we take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
- Special benefits, such as an incompany physiotherapist and bicycle repairer. There is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.
