The Cardiovascular & Respiratory Physiology (CRPH) group is looking for a PhD-candidate in the NOCTIVENT project: ‘
I
mproving chronic
noct
urnal noninvasive
vent
ilation in COPD patients: a multimodality approach’. This translational project spans a challenging spectrum of innovative telemonitoring and advanced signal analyses with the ultimate goal to further improve nocturnal noninvasive ventilation for COPD patients at their homes.

You will play a central role in the NOCTIVENT project while working closely together with multiple partners from clinical healthcare and biomedical industry. The consortium pursues the common objective of a clinically suitable, synchronized multiple-parameter acquisition system including the development of automated signal analysis of large quantities of patient data acquired in a domestic setting. Embedded into the enthusiastic, multidisciplinary NOCTIVENT team, you will be a leading figure to manage the prospective clinical trial in COPD patients assisted with home mechanical ventilation. Your role in NOCTIVENT will qualify you as a medical translational expert in respiratory physiology and noninvasive ventilatory support.

You will be appointed as member of the CRPH group, which is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW) and embedded in the Translational Physiology cluster of the TechMed Centre. Together with our clinical partners we strive to develop innovative, practical solutions for daily care working together with the biomedical industry. This specific project is performed in close collaboration with the Center for Home Mechanical Ventilation of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).

The project is financed by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) in the domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (TTW).

Your profile

  • You are highly motivated, dynamic, proactive and an enthusiastic team player (F/M)
  • You have a MSc degree in Technical Medicine or Biomedical Engineering
  • You have affinity with patient care, mechanical ventilation and acquisition and analysis of big data
  • You are eager to work in a close but flexible collaboration with the clinical environment at the UMCG, including regular visits to Groningen

Our offer

  • As a PhD student at the UT, you will be appointed in a full-time position for four years, with a qualifier in the first year, surrounded by a stimulating and exciting scientific technical and translational medical environment
  • The University offers a dynamic ecosystem with enthusiastic colleagues in an excellent and stimulating scientific and educational environment with an attractive campus and plenty of facilities for sports and leisure
  • Your salary and associated conditions are in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU)
  • You will receive a gross monthly salary ranging from € 2541,- (first year) to € 3247,- (fourth year)
  • There are excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, and a solid pension scheme
  • A family-friendly institution that offers parental leave (both paid and unpaid)
  • You will have a training programme as part of the Twente Graduate School where you and your supervisors will determine a plan for a suitable education and supervision
  • We encourage a high degree of responsibility and independence, while collaborating with close colleagues, researchers, clinicians and other staff.

About the department

The Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology group is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW) and embedded in the Translational Physiology cluster of the TechMed Centre. Together with our clinical partners we strive to develop innovative, practical solutions for daily care working together with the biomedical industry. The goals of the CRPH group are to increase system-based understanding of cardiorespiratory physiology, and thereby improve quality of medical education and patient care, by developing improved diagnostics and guiding of therapy. Means include biomedical signal processing and modelling of the cardiovascular and respiratory system.

About the organization

The Faculty of Science & Technology (Technische Natuurwetenschappen, TNW) engages some 700 staff members and 2000 students in education and research on the cutting edge of chemical technology, applied physics and biomedical technology. Our fields of application include sustainable energy, process technology and materials science, nanotechnology and technical medicine. As part of a people-first tech university that aims to shape society, individuals and connections, our faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad, and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. Our research has a high profile both in the Netherlands and internationally and is strengthened by the many young researchers working on innovative projects with as doctoral candidates and post-docs. It has been accommodated in three multidisciplinary UT research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centre and Digital Society Institute.
