International Advocacy Officer Human Rights Focus

Stichting Volunteer Activists is dedicated to monitoring and addressing human rights violations in the MENA region, with a particular focus on Iran. As an organisation, we leverage our research, expertise, and network to influence international policy through advocacy focusing on international civil society organisations, policy makers, and international bodies like the UN and ILO.

Stichting Volunteer Activists seeks a dedicated International Advocacy Officer to address human rights violations in Iran, particularly in the labor community, women’s rights, and the freedom of association and assembly. This role centers on influencing policies in the EU and at international organisations, and leveraging Iran’s participation in international forums such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the UN Human Rights Council to enhance accountability and enforce human rights standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain strategic maps of stakeholders and key players influential in shaping international policies regarding Iran, including the EU, international civil society organisations, and UN agencies.
  • Engage actively in international networks, coordinating efforts to inform and influence policymakers about human rights abuses in Iran.
  • Organise and lead international events, both virtual and in-person, to showcase research findings and foster collaborative initiatives with civil society and policymakers.

Qualifications:

  • Proven advocacy skills with a strong understanding of human rights issues, capable of formulating impactful policy recommendations and advocacy strategies.
  • Extensive experience working with civil society organizations within the MENA region, with a deep understanding of the socio-political landscape relevant to our operations.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills with global civil society groups and policymakers to develop and implement collaborative strategies and specific case work.
  • Analytical acumen with a strategic mindset, adept at identifying challenges and opportunities, and converting them into actionable plans.
  • Demonstrable experience in gender equality and women’s rights initiatives.
  • High cultural sensitivity and excellent interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively across diverse cultural settings.
  • Self-motivated and independent with the confidence to make critical decisions with minimal oversight.
  • Strong team collaboration skills, driven by a collective goal to achieve impactful results.
  • Fluent in English. Proficiency in additional languages like Farsi, Arabic, French, or Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally multiple times per year.

Benefits:

  • Dynamic, international work environment based in Amsterdam.
  • Competitive salary range of €3,000 to €4,500 per month based on a 38-hour workweek, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Initial 12-month contract with potential for extension, for 32-38 hours per week.
  • Excellent secondary benefits including mobile phone allowance, remote work support, and comprehensive travel expense reimbursement.

About Volunteer Activists

Volunteer Activists (VA) is a nonprofit, non- governmental organization based in the Netherlands. From 2001 to 2007, VA operated inside Iran as the largest capacity building organization in the country. From 2012, the VA team continued its activism from Amsterdam following security threats. Assisting Iranian CSOs through research-informed capacity building is one of the primary activities of VA. Other specialisations include: facilitation of information exchange among civil society activists, advocacy and expansion of democracy and human rights and peace building – both within Iranian society and communities in the MENA region.
