Job description

Are you interested in facilitating research that serves the well-being and health of humans and animals? And would you like to contribute to the health and welfare of laboratory animals to the transition towards animal-free research methods? If so, Utrecht University’s Central Laboratory Animal Research Facility has a vacancy that might interest you and moreover will allow you to develop your potential as a veterinarian and consultant to the full.

Position
You will be working with laboratory animal caretakers and biotechnicians at the
(CLARF), laboratory animal experts at the
(AWB) Utrecht and researchers in the fields of veterinary and human health (at Utrecht University, University Medical Center Utrecht and external clients).

Together with a fellow veterinarian, you will be responsible for the health (both preventive and curative) of the laboratory animals (which include rodents, rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats, dogs and birds). You will also be developing and implementing policy in the fields of laboratory animal health, animal welfare and health monitoring, as consultant to the CLARF management team. Finally, you will be contributing to the transition towards animal-free research methods.

Duties
  • You will assist researchers in developing and conducting animal studies and assess project proposals and working protocols for veterinary aspects, such as the microbial status of the laboratory animals, anaesthesia, analgesia and medication to be used.
  • You will monitor the health and welfare status of the laboratory animals and take action in case the animals experience discomfort and/or health issues.
  • You will take part in the discussion on and contribute to the implementation of the 3Rs policy: replacement, reduction and refinement of laboratory animal use.
  • As a veterinarian, you will make an active contribution to activities in the fields of organisational and cultural change within the CLARF, such as the strategic plan, accommodation issues, developing staff expertise and improving the efficiency of working methods.
  • Together with your fellow veterinarian, you will contribute to the CLARF’s certification and quality procedures.
  • You will teach a part of the Laboratory Animal Science course at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
  • You participate in the consignment service.

Qualifications


This position would suit a person who meets the following requirements:
  • As a fully qualified veterinarian, you have the necessary curiosity and energy to acquire relevant expertise in the fields of laboratory animal medicine, laboratory animal science and surgery (including microsurgery).
  • You have good social and communication skills. You have excellent speech and written
in both Dutch (at least CEFR B2 level after one year) and English (CEFR C1 level).
  • You have an affinity with clinical work in an academic research environment.
  • You are excited by the idea of working in a changing environment and taking a project-based approach to complex challenges while remaining focused on results, client-oriented and decisive.

Initially, you will work 0.6 FTE on a one-year temporary contract. In case of good performance, this will be converted into a permanent contract.
Your salary will depend on your education and experience but will be a maximum of €5,439 gross per month for a full-time contract (salary scale 11 in the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). We also offer excellent
