Emergo by UL’s Human Factors Research & Design (HFR&D) team is a global Human Factors Engineering (HFE) consultancy with offices in Concord, MA; Chicago, IL; Utrecht, The Netherlands; Cambridge, United Kingdom; and Tokyo, Japan. Emergo by UL's HFR&D staff consists of nearly 70 human factors research and design professionals with degrees in disciplines such as human factors, engineering, psychology, and design. Note that Emergo by UL is the advisory services (consulting) division of UL (formerly Underwriters Laboratories), which has been a product safety innovator and leader since its founding in 1894.

Emergo by UL’s HFR&D team is an industry leader in providing user research, user interface design, usability testing and other human factors consulting services to its clients. Many of the world’s leading medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers rely upon our services to produce safe and satisfying products and get them launched. Our work involves the research, design, and evaluation of the user interfaces of medical devices, pharmaceutical devices, diagnostics and laboratory instruments. Our research and design portfolio include products and systems such as robotic surgery systems, imaging devices, autoinjectors, inhalers, ventilators, mobile medical apps, laboratory instruments and in vitro diagnostic devices. Our portfolio of work also includes non-medical products such as consumer products, automotive diagnostic tools, and software applications. As a member of the team, you will be:

  • Conducting usability testing, field research, individual interviews, and group interviews.
  • Reviewing deliverables and ensuring that they meet quality standards.
  • Analyzing quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate client user interface designs.
  • Delivering test results, conclusions, and opportunities for improvement to clients via presentations and written deliverables.
  • Developing and reviewing documentation, including but not limited to usability test plans and reports, risk analyses, user profiles, task analyses, and Human Factors Engineering reports.
  • Providing project and client management support, including proposal generation, schedule adherence, and project-related decisions.
  • Mentoring and supporting junior Human Factors Specialists.
  • Researching and maintaining current knowledge of medical industry regulations and standards.

資格

  • University Degree (Equivalent to Bachelor’s degree) in Human Factors Engineering or a related discipline plus generally 2-4 years of related experience.
  • Advanced degree in Human Factors Engineering preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and present effectively.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.
  • Business English fluency (both written and verbal). Native in Japanese.
