Your challenge
You will be appointed as a junior researcher of the European Horizon2020 project I-CARE4OLD, in collaboration with 14 international partners organisations from 6 European counties, Israel, Canada, the USA.Background
Optimal care for older patients with complex chronic conditions (CCC) is challenging. Not only do older patients with CCC present with multiple conditions and functional impairments, these often interact with each other, as well as with their treatments.
Patients with CCC are concentrated in home care and nursing home settings. Professionals working in these settings often lack appropriate decision support that mirrors the medical and functional complexity of these persons. Aim of I-CARE4OLD is to improve reliable prognoses and estimation of treatment impact for older care recipients with CCC in home care and nursing homes settings. The project aims to develop, validate, and test next generation decision support, using high quality internationally standardized routine care data.
Main Approach of our multidisciplinary international consortium is to:
(1) link high quality and structured routine care assessments of functional capacities, diseases, and treatments with administrative repositories on mortality, (unplanned) hospitalizations or long-term care admissions on CCC patients from 8 countries;
(2) develop and validate prognostic algorithms using a variety of techniques including machine learning to better predict (i) outcomes and the modifying impact of (ii) pharmacological and (iii) non-pharmacological treatments;
(3) test user experiences of health professionals on individual patients with an e-platform that processes algorithms on new assessments real time.
You contribute to multiple work packages. Focus will be to estimate the impact of non-pharmacological interventions on (prevention of) adverse outcomes in multinational databases. You support the composition of high-quality Dutch databases and prepare analytic files. You review the literature, perform (big) data research, and prepare pilots with professionals to test the new decision supports. You report in scientific journals, present on conferences, finally resulting in a PhD dissertation. Parallel, you support the management team preparing consortium meetings, internal and external communication, and dissemination activities. You receive regular supervision and follow an individualized educational program which can result in a master of epidemiology (eg EpidM).
Your profile
What we expect from you is a completed academic training such as in medicine, health or behavioral sciences, medical informatics, epidemiology. You have some experience in conducting scientific research and quantitative data analysis in statistical software programs (for example SPSS, STATA or R) You are accurate, have perseverance, excellent organizational and communication skills, you enjoy knowledge acquisition and have the ambition to acuire a PhD. You speak and write English fluently. We also encourage international researchers to apply. Experience with (research on) care for older people is an asset.Your work environment
You work in a friendly and stimulating multidisciplinary research department with a mix of junior and senior researchers, clinicians and supportive staff with regular exchanges, and knowledge transfers. The project will be embedded in the ‘Aging & Later Life’ research program of the Amsterdam Public Health research institute and the ‘Care for Older Persons’ research programme of the Department of General Practice. We offer
Salary Scale -: marktconform gross when employed full-time (depending on qualifications and experience).Salary scale: 2495 till 4615 euro based on a 36 hour week, depending on qualifications and experience.
