Junior Researcher (Cell Technology)
Enza Zaden is looking for an innovative and driven junior researcher eager to develop cell technology methods that can be implemented in breeding programs to accelerate the development of new vegetable varieties.
What are you going to do?
As a Junior Researcher, you will learn to lead research projects and support implementation of new methods in the field of micropropagation, chemical mutagenesis, genome editing and doubled haploids. You will work closely with your cell technology colleagues as well as other Biotechnology and breeding teams, which are highly motivated to develop the best vegetable varieties.Department
At Cell Technology (CT), we cooperate with other Biotechnology and breeding departments to deliver plants with various genetic value. Within cell biology research, we focus on developing protocols that enable us to copy, fix and generate new genetics. Once we have established these protocols, we work closely with our production team to run them in a routine environment, transforming these protocols into products that are used by the various breeding/Biotechnology teams. We have experience in plant growth, doubled haploid production, micropropagation and somatic embryogenesis, plant transformation and genome editing, chemical and genetic mutagenesis, protoplast-based technologies as well as embryo rescue. We are keen on expanding our technology portfolio by exploring advances in the above-mentioned techniques.

You are passionate about plant development and eager to translate research into cell biology applications serving breeding needs. You fit well working in a team and, as a Junior Researcher, you will be learning to work independently and accurately in order to develop into a Researcher smoothly and quickly. Your natural curiosity drives you to investigate (new) scientific findings, experiment and conclude in practical and timely manner. You come up with creative solutions fitting the situational needs. Your attitude is analytic, proactive and practical. You are perseverant when dealing with complex challenges and you have a flexible mindset that allows you to switch between activities and re-prioritize when needed in a fast paced, dynamic organization. Thanks to your good communication skills, you connect easily with people on multiple levels and take position based on relevant arguments for improvements in the process chain.In short, you:
- have a PhD degree in (green) life sciences or a MSc in (green) life sciences ideally with at least 2 years of relevant experience in plant biology;
- have experience with a wide range of in vitro cell and tissue culture methodologies;
- have some experience with project management;
- have experience with molecular biology;
- have passion for handling plants in vitro and ex vitro;
- are knowledgeable about plant development and plant regeneration biology;
- have affinity with scouting and implementation of new technologies in the field of cell and tissue culture;
- have interest in translating research findings into practical applications;
- enjoy working in an international team;
- are fluent in English.
