Reservoir Simulation Development

Tno - Utrecht - 20-04-2024 Naar vacature

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Reservoir Simulation Development Scientist at TNO in Utrecht!

LI-JL2

About this position

We are seeking a scientist to strengthen our team on reservoir modelling & optimization, which focusses on flow and transport in the deep subsurface for efficient and sustainable use of the subsurface. This team is part of our department HRE, where research on groundwater, chemistry and fluid flows influenced by both natural and anthropogenic processes in the subsurface is carried out in projects for the public task of the Geological Survey as well as for external clients. You will work on topics like geothermal energy, CCS, hydrogen storage, heat storage and hydrocarbon production.

What will be your role?

You will focus on the design, development, testing and deployment of reservoir simulation tools and their use, both inside and outside the organization, for energy systems modelling and management. This includes the development of functionality for the next-generation open-source reservoir simulator, and its application to modelling subsurface energy supply and storage. Therefore you may be involved in applications such as production and storage of hydrocarbons, production and storage of geothermal energy, and carbon and hydrogen storage. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary department with geohydrologists and reservoir engineers, and strong links to production technologists and other geoscience specialists. You will have many opportunities to work together with international clients on developing innovative models for complex problems faced by the energy industry.

What we expect from you

You will be involved in multiple projects across our project portfolio and lead the simulator development effort within these projects. You are able to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop complex physics-based models for flow in porous media and suggest and implement additions where useful. You are able to translate requirements from users from different application domains to software solutions. You'll be working together and communicating with both developers and end-users in the oil and gas, geothermal, hydrogen and CCS domains. You are able to identify and implement ways of improving reservoir simulator performance, make contributions at scientific conferences, and follow relevant academic and industry developments to identify promising technologies.

To succeed in this position we prefer you to have a background in the following:
Significant (3+ years) and relevant work experience in the field of reservoir engineering and simulation;
PhD in e.g. reservoir engineering, physics, computational science, mathematics, earth science, or similar;
Course work and/or research must focus on physics, numerical and analytical modelling, and/or scientific computing;
Communication and technical leadership skills that are important for dissemination of tool capabilities and setting development priorities, and for understanding and managing needs and expectations of clients and other stakeholders;

Programming skills in C++, and familiarity with GitHub, software development toolchains (e. g., unit testing, continuous integration, version control, debugging, and profiling) and scripting languages (e.g., Python);

Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
