Postdoctoral researcher Research in Education

Vumc - Amsterdam - 19-03-2021 Naar vacature

Accessibility of selective programs in university education
  • 26 hours
  • Salary : 2911 to 4615 euro
  • temporary contract

Your challenge

The percentage of first-generation students and students with a migration background is relatively low in university education. These students are therefore referred as “non-traditional students” in university education. Findings further suggest that non-traditional students who are in university less often opt for selective honors programs. Possible reasons for this include stereotyping, an overall lower sense of belonging in education and their negative effects on student motivation. In this project, you will employ quantitative and qualitative studies to further investigate whether non-traditional students are indeed underrepresented in the honors programs of the VU and the UvA, and which mechanisms may underlie this. You will specifically look into the motivation of students, the role of social identity processes and the role of the social network of students in the choice to follow an honors program. This research is part of the larger consortium project “Accessible higher education before, through and after the gate – an integral perspective on the accessibility of higher education in the Netherlands” (‘Toegankelijk hoger onderwijs voor, door en na de poort – een integraal perspectief op de toegankelijkheid van het hoger onderwijs in Nederland’). Meetings for discussion and alignment with the consortium partners happen regularly.

As a postdoctoral researcher you are responsible for setting up and conducting the empirical studies, in which you further develop the theoretical background, conduct a survey study and hold interviews with students, under the supervision of the senior researchers from the research team. The research will be conducted mainly in English because of the large number of international students in the honors programs.

Your main tasks and responsibilities are:
  • conducting a survey study;
  • setting up and conducting an interview study;
  • maintaining contacts with the relevant parties involved, such as the coordinators of the honors programs and other researchers of the consortium project;
  • analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data;
  • reporting of findings in scientific articles and presenting at various meetings and conferences;
  • following courses to increase your (research/analysis/personal) skills if needed.
  • contributing to the team: participating in and contributing to Research in Education meetings like research meetings, journal clubs, conference presentation practice sessions and abstract writing workshops; other required team or administrative work.

Your profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious researcher with demonstrable scientific experience. You have a strong motivation to advance scientific research in the field of accessibility of higher education, both theoretically and empirically. Since you will be in direct contact with students, and work within a research team and a large consortium project, we find it important that you have excellent social and communication skills and can work well in a team.

We are looking for a postdoc with the following qualifications:
  • a completed PhD in social sciences, medical education, educational sciences or a related field;
  • extensive experience with qualitative and quantitative research;
  • able to work efficiently and autonomously;
  • good skills in organizing, planning, coordinating;
  • good oral and written communication skills in English (understanding of the Dutch language is desirable for team and consortium meetings).
