Job description

The
in the Department of Immunology at the Erasmus University Medical Center is inviting applicants for a postdoc position. Dr. Schliehe´s team has a focus on antigen presentation and immune regulation in the context of immunotherapies. It combines a large spectrum of experimental approaches (including classical immunological techniques, in vivo models, genetic screens, mass spectrometry, and chemical immunology) to explore the molecular mechanisms and regulatory processes involved in antigen presentation on MHC class I molecules as well as innate and adaptive immune activation.

In this NIH-funded project, the Postdoc will investigate small molecule degraders / Proteolysis Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs) as novel therapeutic agents in cancer immunotherapy. PROTACs are hetero-bispecific molecules that link a specific E3 ligase complex with a target protein that is consequently degraded by the ubiquitin/proteasome system. The central aim of this project is to perform proof-of-concept experiments demonstrating the potential of PROTACs to improve cancer-specific CD8+ T-cell responses in an immunotherapeutic setting. The candidate will generate novel experimental tools (e.g. genetically engineered cancer cell lines), perform in vitro / ex vivo cell culture assays with mouse and human cell lines / immune cells, and execute in vivo cancer models in mice – including luciferase-based in vivo imaging techniques, tumor regression studies and the ex vivo characterization of immune responses.

This position requires a highly motivated and skilled Postdoc candidate that can independently work on the diverse aspects of this project. In addition, team spirit and the ability to closely collaborate with other scientists in Dr. Schliehe´s team and the Department of Immunology are considered important.

Work environment

A healthy population and excellence in healthcare through research and education. This is what Erasmus MC stands for. Conducting groundbreaking work, pushing boundaries and leading the way. In research, education, and healthcare. We are practical people with a high level of expertise, working hard to improve and renew the healthcare of today and the public health of tomorrow.

The Department of Immunology performs cutting edge basic and translational research, participates in patient care by performing laboratory diagnostics (Laboratory for Medical Immunology) and supporting Clinical Immunology, and performs a wide range of educational activities. Major research focuses in the department span molecular to clinical immunology and includes the development and function of innate and adaptive immunity, autoimmunity, immune deficiencies, immunity to infection, neuroimmunology, and lymphoid malignancies. The department has state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that support basic and translational research. The department is involved in multiple International Consortia and networks, which facilitate innovation and rapid implementation of new immunological concepts and technologies

Qualifications and skills

Successful candidates hold a PhD in Immunology / Tumor Immunotherapy (or a related field) and ideally have a strong background and hands-on experience in the area of tumor immunology. Specific knowledge in the field of cancer immunotherapy, the molecular action of PROTACs and/or the MHC class I presentation pathway will be an advantage. Candidates should be familiar with a broad range of tools and techniques in immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Furthermore, training and certification to work with laboratory mice and previous experience with murine tumor models is highly desirable.

In addition to their strong experimental and theoretical background, successful candidates have publications in leading peer-reviewed journals and had presentations at international conferences. Excellent oral and written communication skills and scientific integrity are considered important.

Together, we are looking for a highly motivated and skilled postdoc with the desire to independently explore novel strategies in cancer immunotherapy. At the same time, we aim to recruit a colleague with team spirit and the ambition to contribute to the overall scientific progress of our team.
