Want to help us investigate the brain on multiple scales, from molecule to behavior? Then we are looking for you!
  • 36 hours
  • Salary : 2422 to 3280 euro
  • temporary contract

Your challenge

As a research assistant, you contribute to multidisciplinary research into the functioning of the brain on multiple scales, from molecule to behaviour. We combine microscopic research using immunohistochemistry and lightsheet microscopy on brain tissues from patients with brain tumors, Parkinson’s disease and possibly other disorders. In addition, we analyze the meso- and macroscopic brain characteristics of these patients using MRI and magnetoencephalography (MEG). Ultimately, we want to use this approach to create a multiscale brain network to better understand how the brain disorder interacts with the rest of the brain, and what effect this interaction has on, for example, cognition and emotion. Within our team that conducts research into multiscale brain networks, you participate in data collection and analyses, which lead to new scientific insights and publications. We are looking for two research assistants with different tasks.

As a research assistant on theme 1 (microscale), your main tasks are:
  • You perform immunohistochemical staining and lightsheet microscopy;
  • You develop image analysis methods and perform data analyses;
  • You contribute ideas about combining the data on different scales;
  • You participate in working group discussions and present the results of your research.

As a research assistant on theme 2 (macroscale), your main tasks are:
  • You analyze MRI and MEG data, including pipeline development, quality checking, removing artifacts and creating a brain network for each modality;
  • You perform graph theoretical (connectome) analyses;
  • You contribute ideas about combining the data on different scales;
  • You participate in working group discussions and present the results of your research.

Your profile

For our project, we are looking for two enthusiastic research assistants with excellent communication and organizational skills. You do not only use these skills in contact with your colleagues within the department, but also in close collaboration with colleagues from other departments such as neurology, pathology and radiology. You are a teamplayer and thrive when interacting with others. At the same time, you have good oral and written skills in English. You work accurately and are able to work independently and are proactive.

In addition, you meet the following requirements (theme 1):
  • You have completed a relevant Master’s degree (preferably neuroscience, biomedical sciences, neuropsychology or related);
  • You have demonstrable experience and affinity with immunohistochemical staining methods and/or lightsheet microscopy;
  • You have demonstrable experience and affinity with image analysis methods (for example ImageJ and/or Qupath);
  • Some experience with programming or writing scripts is an advantage;
  • Experience with or interest in MRI image analysis is an advantage;

In addition, you meet the following requirements (theme 2):
  • You have completed a relevant Master’s degree (preferably neuroscience, biomedical sciences, neuropsychology or related);
  • You have demonstrable experience and affinity with imaging techniques, namely MRI or MEG or both;
  • You have demonstrable experience and affinity with programming or writing scripts;
  • Experience or interest in microscopic analysis is an advantage.
