What you are going to do
The department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Amsterdam University Medical Center (location AMC, Amsterdam) has a vacancy for a PhD candidate in the research project ‘When pink clouds are absent: Effects of unwanted pregnancy on psychosocial health of women, men, and their children, and the protective role of partner involvement, social support, and decision ownership’
. The project has been funded by a ZonMw grant.
When a woman finds out that she is pregnant unexpectedly, this is not always a happy event. Some of these unintended pregnancies are terminated, others result in the birth of much wanted and loved children, and there are many nuances in between. There is ample evidence that having an abortion does not increase the risk on long-term mental health problems, but carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term has been associated with poorer mental health outcomes of women later in life, and their children. The question is, to what extent is the event of carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term related to these adversities?
The aim of the project is to investigate
- whether pregnancy intentions are impacting post-pregnancy psychosocial stress (PS), independent of co-occurring risks;
- if this also leads to intergenerational transfer of PS in the children, both short- and long-term;
- whether carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term is associated with more PS (during and after pregnancy) than terminating an unwanted pregnancy;
- how the men involved in unwanted pregnancies are affected;
- which factors may facilitate or protect against post-pregnancy PS and intergenerational transfer of PS; and
- the support and care needs of parents at-risk for post-pregnancy PS.
In the project, we work together with the Dutch Association for Midwives, the Dutch Association for Abortion Doctors, and experience experts. The position is a 3-year (1fte) track, but can be spread out over a maximum of 4 years (0,8 fte
