Cover for our Outdoor Education Teacher in Primary School

Are you an outdoorsy person who loves nature and is not afraid of a bit of rain?
We are looking for a cover for maternity leave for our Outdoor Education Program in Primary School. The teacher will have a timetable with rotation of all classes of approximately 18-24 students and will be responsible for their Outdoor Education Program. The outdoor education program entails working with the students in our garden, organising and accompanying outdoor experience.We are looking for someone who is confident in working independently, takes initiative and is able to offer rich learning experiences in nature based education. We strive towards curriculum design that takes best practice in inquiry-based, experiential education with the aim to equip students with the skills, understanding and capacities towards the UWC mission of Peace and a Sustainable Future.

The new colleague as a part time teacher in Primary will have a work week of on average 32 hours (4 days) per week.
As 80% of our student population are non-native English speaking students, familiarity with teaching in English as a second language is essential.

Due to the temporary and part time nature of this vacancy we prefer staff who live locally.

Education degree and experience

  • Completed Education for/Certified as a Primary classroom teacher, which qualifies for accreditation according to the Dutch educational system (DUO).
  • Successful experience in delivery of the IB-PYP, or other conceptually driven curriculum.
  • Experience in and passion for teaching Outdoor Education.
  • Experience supporting student inquiry.
  • Experience designing rich, real-life tasks.
  • Working with transient student populations and Third Culture Kids.
  • Working with diverse student needs in an integrated and inclusive classroom.

Professional competencies

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following competencies on a professional proficiency level:
  • Pedagogy: Subject knowledge and methodological competence.
  • Pastoral: Proven success in providing students with structure and support in a safe learning environment.
  • Organizational: Creating a safe, well-organized learning environment, record keeping and ICT competence.

Terms of Employment

You will get a temporary contract of employment under Dutch law: the initial contract starts on 1 September, 2024, for cover of maternity leave of our current teacher. It may lead into cover for parental leave after that with a maximum end date of 1-7-2025.

To be able to work in the Netherlands, a (foreign) staff member must be able to successfully apply for:
✔ Residence and work permits for the Netherlands.
✔ A Dutch VOG (certificate of good conduct).
UWCM will assist in the application process for residence and work permits and VOG.
