Senior researcher/chair of research group ‘Societal reactions to crime’ (tenured) and senior researcher in the project ‘non-custodial sanctions’

Are you an ambitious (senior) researcher who is excited about fundamental scientific problems as well as searching for a link between science and society? Do you have a background in Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, or any related field? Then you might be the candidate we are looking for!

The Netherlands’ Institute for the Study of Crime and Law Enforcement (NSCR) has a vacancy for a senior researcher (tenured), who will lead our research programme on societal reactions to crime and fulfil a leading role in the large-scale research project on ‘non-custodial sanctions’.

The NSCR is structured along five lines of research (see nscr.nl) and the research line ‘societal reactions to crime’ is one of them. Within this research line, a large programme is about to start, which is focussing on the differing consequences of sanctions other than full custody, i.e., the different types of sanctions that do not completely restrict personal freedom. The number of such sanctions has grown enormously in recent years. The programme will study fundamental questions around sanctions and their consequences and has, at the same time, a strong link to important societal partners. A newly set-up large-scale, longitudinal data collection is central to the project. It offers a unique opportunity to build a large innovative research line that is highly socially relevant.

Tasks You chair the research programme group on societal reactions to crime in all relevant aspects, concerning personnel, organizational as well as research strategical matters. You participate in the management team of the NSCR, which consists of the other programme leaders, the controller, the institute’s manager, and the director. Next to this, you take up a leading role in the project on non-custodial sanctions and set up a new research line.

Requirements

  • a PhD degree and an excellent publication record with articles in leading international journals in the fields of Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, or related disciplines
  • outstanding skills in empirical research, from data collection to quantitative analysis
  • basic knowledge of mixed methods and qualitative method approaches
  • experience with the supervision of junior researchers and project coordination/management
  • an affinity with research on the societal consequences of sanctions
  • demonstrated the ability to acquire external funding
  • a good command of Dutch and English languages
  • an open mind, team spirit and good networking capabilities.

Conditions of employment
  • You will receive a permanent contract at the NSCR (full-time or 0.8 fte).
  • The salary depends on experience and is at least € 6,074 up to a maximum of € 8,123 gross per month based on a full-time appointment (scale 13/14 of the collective labour agreement Research Institutions).
