The position
Our Ship Management Department (SMD) service are all about delivering high performance vessels on projects for our clients. In your job as R&D Engineer you will contribute to development acceleration and implementation of new technologies in our vessels, equipment and processes needed for sustainable growth and realizing the long-term ambitions of Van Oord.You will work on conceptual ideas and practical solutions, with everything in between. Van Oord has a wide variety of vessels such as fall pipe-, cable lay-, pipe lay-, trenching and installation vessels. All equipped with innovative automated equipment. You will advise SMD with whatever in depth questions they may have. Besides that you will also create demand from your internal clients by engaging them in new concepts and developments.
Your responsibilities
You will perform research into electrical & automation systems and subsequently advise SMD on innovation and the consequences for our vessels and systems. Next to that you will be responsible for:- Translate the company’s mission and strategy into roadmaps and realize initiatives on these roadmaps;
- Market research and coordinate de development of new technologies and engineering methods;
- Harvest ideas and coordinate projects that can contribute to improve our performance in design, processes and equipment;
- Propose business cases and initiate innovative projects in cooperation with internal and external stakeholders.
- Maintain and develop R&D and technology cooperation networks and collaborations with universities, suppliers and clients;
- Test theories in the crucible of practice, both with computer or other simulations.
Job requirements

This is how you acquire innovative knowledge, which you are keen to share – whether with your colleagues at the office or on board. They can see how passionate you are about your field! In addition, you bring the following to the table:- Bachelor or master’s degree Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, System and controls or equivalent;
- At least 3 to 5 years of research and development experience focused on electrical & automation equipment, preferably vessel related;
- Structured, systematic and pragmatic;
- Strong communication and social skills;
- Eager to acquire new knowledge;
- Think out of the box;
- Hands-on mentality;
- Excellent command of the Dutch and English language;
- Flexible attitude towards incidental traveling and working abroad.
