Job description

Within the immunology field, the Radboudumc coordinates a large European (IMI) project:

. In this project, we study immunity against pertussis (or whooping cough). We are looking for a postdoc to join our project that uses data-driven biostatistical modelling, bioinformatics and machine-learning methods to map variation in the immune response to pertussis vaccination and infection with the aim to identify biomarkers of protection and immunological persistence.

Pertussis is a highly transmissible acute respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis, which has re-emerged as a serious public health issue despite high vaccine coverage in many countries. At present, multiple pertussis vaccines are in use, which differ both in composition as well as the type of immune response that is induced. Within PERISCOPE, a range of human clinical studies have been performed to understand these differences and to establish an immunological framework for developing the next generation of pertussis vaccines. These studies include controlled human infection studies and vaccination studies in various populations, including pregnant women, infants, children, adolescents and adults (see Longitudinal samples have been collected within these studies for analysis of immunological parameters, including antibodies, B-cells and T-cells, but also bulk and single-cell gene expression data.

The key

tasks and responsibilities

for this project are:
  • Examine the development and persistence of immune response parameters against pertussis in different intervention groups.
  • Correlate immunological responses with various parameters, including infection endpoints and prior vaccination status.
  • Perform statistical analyses of immunological data to describe the longitudinal effects of infection or vaccination on immunity and to compare vaccination strategies.
Prepare research reports in the form of publications, presentations and progress reports.
Communicate with other members of the research team on a weekly basis.

Department

(CMBI) fosters a lively, international and interactive scientific culture that aims to have a significant impact on health care and to obtain mechanistic insights into life by applying new and existing methods in the analysis of biomedical data. We strive for excellence through innovation and through intense collaboration to identify the relevant research questions and design follow up experiments

Laboratory of Medical Immunology (LMI)

Directly involved in this project is the LMI, which is embedded within the Department of Laboratory Medicine and the Radboud Center for Infectious Diseases and performs core immunological patient diagnostics within the Radboudumc. LMI research is focused on the regulation of the immune system, with a particular focus on immunity to infectious diseases. Members of the CMBI and the LMI collaborate closely together in this project learning from each other about immunology and computational methodology.
