Job description

To complement and strengthen its research and teaching activities, the division of
is seeking a creative and collaborative specialist in quantitative image analysis. You will be challenged to set up your own independent group and develop strong research links with the other research groups within the division.

You are a researcher who is interested in developing innovative approaches for (real-time) analysis of complex microscopy data. This position offers many opportunities to collaborate with experimental groups that develop and apply advanced microscopy techniques. Particularly exciting is the anticipated interplay with the groups within the recently awarded Gravitational programme IMAGINE! - Innovative Microscopy and Guidance of Cells in their Native Environment. This programme aims to transform cell biology by developing and applying advanced microscopy and real-time molecular manipulation techniques to study cells in their natural complexity and diversity. One technological goal is to establish robust event-driven imaging and high-precision control strategies that will enable real-time manipulation of key aspects of the biological systems that will be studied (smart microscopy). Ultimately, the goal is to establish microscopy-guided automated real-time control of biological processes, which will depend to a large extent on novel approaches for real-time automated interpretation of microscopy data.

You, as an Assistant Professor, will be encouraged to actively seek funding for new research projects through personal, national, European and other international grant opportunities .You will supervise the research of Postdoctoral Researchers, PhD candidates, Master’s students, and Bachelor's students. Furthermore, you have the ambition to actively participate in teaching activities at Bachelor's and Master's levels. You enjoy and are motivated to educate and inspire a new generation of scientists.

Qualifications

We are looking for a collaborative expert in quantitative image analysis for microscopy. You are an enthusiastic and creative educator who is able to strengthen Utrecht University’s curriculum in Quantitative Analysis Methods. Next to that we would like you to bring:

  • a PhD degree in image processing/data analysis or a closely related field;
  • interest in intense collaboration with fellow staff members, especially within the Institute of Biodynamics and Biocomplexity;
  • willingness to obtain the university teaching qualification (UTQ) if you not already have this.

Offer

  • a full-time tenure track position for five years (1.0 FTE) that will be subject to a mid-term evaluation after approximately 2.5 years and an end-term evaluation after 4.5 years. If evaluations are positive after five years, the position becomes permanent;
  • a full-time gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranging between €3,974 and €5,439 per month (scale 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (cao));
  • 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and
based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities.

The research division of
has the mission to acquire novel insights into the structure and function of cells and to decipher the cellular basis for human diseases such as cancer and neurological disorders. To achieve this goal, we combine the latest methods in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and microscopy. We are interested in the mechanisms underlying cytoskeletal dynamics, membrane transport and signalling pathways that underlie cell proliferation and differentiation, neuronal development and synaptic plasticity. We investigate cellular processes at a broad range of levels, from single molecules and protein networks to cells, tissues, and whole organisms.
