PAX is looking for an

EU Advocacy Advisor

(28 to 36 hours per week)

Based in Brussels
Advocacy is at the core of PAX’s work. The Public Affairs (PA) team coordinates and implements advocacy in collaboration with country and thematic specialist teams, and our civil society partner organisations from around the world. In particular, the PA team targets UN and EU institutions and representation of member states through its’ liaison offices in New York and Brussels, both with one full time Advocacy Advisor. Advocacy towards the Dutch government and parliament is conducted from the PAX headquarters in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the PA team contributes to strengthening capacities for advocacy with partner organizations.

What will you do?

The EU Advocacy Advisor is responsible for the facilitation and implementation of PAX advocacy towards EU institutions and representations of member states, information and advice to PAX colleagues on EU policy development, end representation of PAX towards EU institutions and Brussels based INGO’s and networks.

Current priorities for the EU Advocacy Advisor are the Middle East, in particular Yemen, Syria and Syrian refugees in the region, Protection of Civilians (including contacts to NATO), the European Peace Facility, security in the Sahel region and facilitating advocacy on EU thematic issues related to peace and security. Priorities can always change due to current developments, in particular the role of EU in Ukraine might be high on the agenda. The EU Advocacy Advisor reports to the Team Leader Public Affairs and works closely with other members of the PA team and program staff at PAX.

Who are we looking for?

  • Strong understanding and experience of advocacy towards the EU and member states;
  • Strong understanding of and work experience in the field of peacebuilding, human rights or refugee policies, (work) experience in a conflict-affected country is an advantage;
  • Proven experience and skills in working with colleagues or partners from around the world;
  • At least three years of relevant work experience;
  • University degree or comparable level (Political Science, Conflict Studies, International Law or other relevant studies);
  • Required competencies: Analysis and opinion forming, persuasiveness, autonomy, result-oriented, networking skills & Situational awareness
  • Excellent command of English, both verbal and written. Other languages such as French, Arabic, Ukrainian or Russian could be useful.
  • Willingness to travel internationally to the PAX headquarters in Utrecht and program countries for meetings with partners;
  • Affinity with PAX’s mission and values;
  • Eligible to work in the EU.

What do we offer?

  • The EU Advocacy Advisor is based in the PAX office in Brussels, together with the Advocacy Strengthening Advisor of the PA team and one program officer;

  • Appointment for 28 hours per week (0,78 fte) with possible extension to 36 hours (1 fte) (depending on funding), initially for one year with prospects for extension;
  • Salary scale 10, depending on experience min. € 2.834,35 to max. € 4.739,91 gross per month for 36 hours per week;
  • 8% holiday-allowance and an end of year bonus;
  • Full reimbursement of commuting expenses within Brussels, 2
