Climate Justice Researcher

Are you concerned about the looming climate crisis and critical of how powerful corporations that got us into this crisis are now seeking to ‘lead’ an unjust energy transition that will further entrench their interests? SOMO is currently seeking a researcher to strengthen our climate justice team. This role is primarily focused on exposing how the current corporate-led energy transition employs the same extractivist, exploitative, neoliberal and neo-colonial logic as the old fossil fuel model. In collaboration with civil society partners that work on social, ecological and economic justice, you will conduct innovative research aimed at challenging the power of corporations and other actors that are benefiting from the unjust energy transition. Your research will also contribute to the development of alternatives that centre the well-being of people and the planet.

In recent years, SOMO has grown from a small-scale organisation to a non-profit organisation with about 35 employees who work to contribute to a fair, just and sustainable world. The majority of SOMO’s staff work from our Amsterdam office, and collaborate with partners across all regions of the world.

Structure

SOMO is organised in several expertise teams: Climate Justice (of which you will be a part), Commodities and Sustainable Chains, Tax and Economic Justice, Corporate Research, Advocacy and Networks, Communications, Operations, and Management. SOMO also hosts and participates in several national and international civil society networks.

Job description and purpose

SOMO is looking for an experienced climate researcher with expertise in investigating multinational corporations and involvement in the climate justice movement. You are expected to carry out intersectional projects together with civil society organisations from different parts of the world and to organize careful processes to enable this collaboration in an inclusive way. These research projects are often a combination of qualitative methods to research the impacts and strategies of multinationals, literature research, and research on supply chains and corporate structures. You understand well how power and transformative processes work, have excellent communication skills, and are able to cooperate and work in a multi-cultural team. We are looking for someone with a strong vision on climate justice, the political and economic changes needed to get us there, and on the role of corporations in a socially and environmentally just future.

Main responsibilities

• Carry out research on structures (corporate, capital, ownership), supply chains, corporate finances, and business operations using specialised databases and open source data, company filings, as well as corporate and media reports
• Explore and use innovative research methods to document social and environmental impacts caused by multinational corporations, particularly mining and energy companies
• Produce clearly written, properly sourced and thorough text presenting the research findings and recommendations for a varied audience that can contribute to supporting partners in their demand for justice, remedy, and/or to end harmful projects
• Generate and use corporate research data to develop data visualisation tools
• Connect your research to that of other SOMO projects and team to develop an overarching narrative that challenges the economic model of the energy transition

Key skills and experience

• A graduate or post-graduate qualification in a relevant field or work experience that has generated a similar knowledge level
• Substantial experience in carrying out technical research on companies, including on their structure and finances and an ability to critically analyse business operations
• Good understanding of the global political and economic power relations, especially between the Global North and South, relevant to climate justice
• Experience in working with partner organisations internationally in a collaborative way
• Proven research, writing, and analytical skills
• Experience in working with data tools, large data sets, and/or data visualization approaches
• Good understanding of corporate actors, the strategies they use and the system in which they operate
• Excellent communication and interpersonal and intercultural skills
• Excellent speaking and writing skills in English, other languages are an asset
• A strong team player able to work with a dynamic team of colleagues within and outside SOMO

We offer

• An exciting and challenging position within a feisty, Amsterdam-based organisation with a large national and international network
• An informal and dynamic work environment with the opportunity to undertake new initiatives
• We initially offer a one-year contract of 32 to 36 hours a week (0.8-0.9 fte), with the intention to make the contract permanent after this year
• A gross monthly salary between €4.050 and €5.774, based on 40 hours a week, depending on experience.
