Senior Software Design Engineer in Astrophysics
Are you our new colleague?
Do you like to work on scientific software? Do you want to be part of the data analysis preparations for new space missions? Then you are the person we are looking for.You and SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research
With your work at SRON, you will prepare our data analysis software for X-ray and infrared astronomy for the next generation of space observatories. The SPEX package is one of the world-leading spectral modelling codes for X-ray astronomy. For the upcoming space missions XRISM and ATHENA, you will build a modular version of SPEX to enable it for use in future data analysis. For the RADEX package, which is widely used in the infra-red/submm astronomy community to model molecular spectra, the main goal is to expand the code to allow multi-molecule and spectral-spatial analysis. The code is currently used for ALMA and SOFIA, but an upgrade is also useful for upcoming observatories like JWST, METIS, GUSTO and OASIS.Your position and team
You will be part of a team of 5 scientists and software engineers (m/f) in the Astrophysics Data-Software Group, which is part of the Astrophysics (ASTRO) program line at SRON. Our team supports data analysis and software projects within the ASTRO program with our expertise on calibration, advanced data analysis methods and software development. You will be based at our new location in Leiden. For the SPEX and RADEX projects, you will closely collaborate with the astronomers developing the code. You will therefore gain hands-on experience in developing scientific software that is specifically tailored to the needs of cutting-edge research.Your project
During the first two years of the appointment, you will contribute to the SPEX software package by creating separate modules and documented interfaces (APIs) for the atomic data, spectral modelling and spectral fitting features of SPEX. In the final six months, you will add spectral-spatial and multi-molecule capability to the RADEX software package. Both packages are mainly written in the Fortran programming language.Position requirements
We are looking for a person with a background in scientific computing or similar at an academic level. Clear assets will be strong programming skills in either Python, C++ and/or Fortran, and hands-on experience with object-oriented/modular software design. Further Fortran training on the job is possible. Furthermore, you are expected to work accurately and in a structured way. Good English language skills (speaking and writing) and the ability to both work in a team and independently are a necessity for us. Providing a public Github profile (or similar) in your CV is highly appreciated.What we offer
The position that we offer at SRON is a full-time position in which you will be employed by NWO-I (The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Institutes) for a period of 2.5 years. The salary will be in accordance with NWO salary scale 10 with a maximum of € 4.514,– gross per month on a full-time basis (depending on your level of education and experience). Compensation for commuting expenses will be provided.NWO-I has good secondary employment conditions such as:

- An excellent pension scheme;
- Ample training opportunities;
- Options for (additional) personal development;
- Excellent facilities for parental leave;
- Possibility of flexible working hours;
