Working at LIACS
The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty where staff and students work together in a dynamic international environment. It is a faculty where personal and academic development are top priorities. Our people are committed to expand fundamental knowledge by curiosity and to look beyond the borders of their own discipline; their aim is to benefit science, and to make a contribution to addressing the major societal challenges of the future.

The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organised in eight institutes. These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 2,300 staff and almost 5,000 students. We are located at the heart of Leiden’s Bio Science Park, one of Europe’s biggest science parks, where university and business life come together.

The Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) is the Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Institute of the Faculty of Science of Leiden University. We offer courses at the Bachelor and Master of Science level in the core areas of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, and Data Science, and in the interdisciplinary areas of ICT in Business, Media Technology and Creative science, and Bioinformatics. We strive for excellence in a caring institute, where excellence, fun, and inclusiveness go hand in hand. We offer a clear and inviting career path to young and talented scientists with the ambition to grow.

Working at LUMC
Changes in society and demographic trends are putting pressure on our healthcare system. In addition to their innovations in academic care, UMCs are increasingly expected to contribute to healthcare solutions that will make care accessible and affordable now and in the future. This is why the LUMC has opted to prioritise Population Health. This involves studying the transition from health to disease in the population and how to reduce the risk of disease, as well as developing and testing interventions to promote health. In view of its importance to society and the associated regional opportunities, the LUMC has chosen to maximise its efforts in this field.

The Health Campus The Hague (HCDH) harbours a highly multidisciplinary research group, where colleagues from Public Health & Primary Care (PHEG) and other LUMC departments collaborate with colleagues from the Faculties of Science, Sociology and Governance to leverage expertises ranging from data science, artificial intelligence and behavioural interventions, to healthcare governance and deep clinical expertise.

Our central mission is to contribute, from various scientific and clinical perspectives, and in cooperation with regional partners, to a longer and healthier life for everyone. As a data scientist, the Extramural LUMC Academic Network (ELAN) will be of particular interest. ELAN is an interdisciplinary cross-domain regional data platform with appropriate policy structure to support our health research. For 100,000+ inhabitants, ELAN links structured medical data, mental health information and social domain context with socioeconomic data such as income, education level, employment status, household composition and neighbourhood and district data. On an individual level. Performing ML/NLP analyses on and administering the infrastructure of ELAN will be an inherent component of your work activities.
