Korte beschrijving

For the internationally oriented art academy of Hogeschool Rotterdam we are looking for a dean who can connect with art education, artistic students and teachers.

Dean Willem de Kooning Academie

(1,0 fte, Rotterdam)

What are you going to do?

As dean, you are integrally responsible for the art academy and for all bachelor's and master's programs in media, art, design, leisure, education and the supporting services in the heart of the design city of Rotterdam. From everyone's role and responsibility, you will ensure, together with the management team and in good coordination with the employee participation and the Office for Inclusivity, solid business operations and processes, a high quality of education and you show inclusive leadership. You create favorable conditions for employees to do their work.

As a connector, you make the special -international and multidisciplinary- character of the academy visible and you build further on the good standing of the institute inside and outside Rotterdam. You activate your network in the arts, you promote integral cooperation, like in the national board meeting KUO, and you do not lose sight of the goal: to educate those creative thinkers and makers that can have a meaningful impact in our society. You stand for connection, transparency, clear communication and attention to the well-being of students, teachers and employees.

As a dean, you also ensure the (organizational) changes that are necessary, the realization of the financial targets, the further development of the master's studies, the exploration together with the WdKA community of the intended merger with Codarts and collaboration with Erasmus University Rotterdam and the possible realization of a Culture Campus in South together with the municipality of Rotterdam. You are a fully-fledged discussion partner and represent the interests of the academy at all levels and in various forums, both national and international.

In this position you report directly to the Executive Board. You are part of the team of deans of the eleven educational institutions and research centers of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences.

Who are you and what are you bringing?

As dean of the Willem de Kooning Academy, you have an academic working and thinking level. You have extensive experience as a manager at a level of final responsibility in an organization of comparable size and complexity. It goes without saying that you have a great affinity with the world of the arts, preferably experience in an artistic practice, and a passion for higher professional education. Due to the international character of the institute and field of work, you can move around in English just as easily as in Dutch.

You understand that arts education requires room for creativity and autonomy, but at the same time a solid foundation and clear frameworks. This means that you are involved and accessible as a person, and you can just as easily focus on results within the agreements and frameworks that have been made. You are a dean for everyone: inclusion is not a management language for you, but a way of doing things.

Organisation

The Willem de Kooning academy is an internationally leading academy for bachelor's and master's programs in media, art, design, leisure and art education. The academy stands for groundbreaking art education, in which connections with social partners and education partners (RASL) give substance to an academy that constantly questions its own boundaries. In addition to art education, the academy also offers economic education aimed at entrepreneurship in the creative industry. WdKA's mission and vision are aimed at developing new ideas about the relevance of the artist, educator, producer or designer and to help our students become the artistic professionals that will respond to tomorrow’s world with a critical vision, energy and care. Our education is distinguished by the three pillars, majors, stations and practices that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and provides our students with the unique opportunity to become proficient in both their craft and the context in which they come to work. Next to this research is a key pillar. WdKA is a large academy that nevertheless feels small in the way in which teams of teachers and students work together. EDI, security, curiosity and ambition are values that are cherished regardless of the size and associated complexity of the organization and systems. With approximately 450 colleagues, WdKA educates more than 2500 students.
