The climate and air quality group at TNO is involved in international research projects regarding the modelling of emission sources for greenhouse gases and air quality at high resolutions. The work done in these projects can be used to e.g. verify the emission reporting of countries, track the impact of emission reduction activities, predict episodes of poor air quality, inform policy making, and more. A core expertise of our team is the construction of high-resolution (up to 100 x 100 m) spatial emission inventories for Europe that can be used as input to atmospheric models. We are continually improving our processes and data products and one of the main challenges is to collect accurate and timely data on where and when activities that cause emissions take place.

What will be your role?

The goal of the internship is to first explore which data products, services and tools are available that can help in the process of spatially and temporally distributing emissions of different source sectors. This should give an answer to the following questions:

  • Which specific types of GIS data (e.g. OpenStreetMap), satellite data and tools (e.g. Google Earth Engine) can we use to identify where and when activities take place?
  • How can we combine e.g. satellite imagery, height data, infrared data, existing data products and/or machine learning to identify activities and locations (e.g. active industrial plants, flue stacks etc.)?
The next step is to choose one specific emission source or sector and compile a spatial and/or temporal map of emission intensities using the collected data sources. The resulting map should be well documented and be ready for use in future emission inventory products.

There is a broad range of sectors/activities on which this internship could focus, e.g.:
  • Industrial activities
  • Traffic/transport
  • Residential (e.g. wood burning)
  • Waste treatment
Depending on the length of the internship and the preferences of the student, the topic will be further specified at the start of the internship.
