ASSIGNMENT | Total Epicardial Delivery DeviceWithin the DEMCON organization, the business unit Medical Systems DEMCON develops and realizes medical devices for diagnosis, therapy, care and self-care. Applications are found in fields including surgery, therapy and diagnostics. Examples include an operating system for eye surgery, a hand scanner for rheumatoid arthritis, a ventilator or a hearing aid. Besides contract R&D activities for clients, the Medical Systems business unit develops and sells devices and technology to end-users via daughter companies such as Finapres, Macawi and DEMCON Medical Robotics.
The projectOne of these DEMCON developments of the Medical Systems business unit is a device for the epicardial (on the outside of the heart) fixation of pacemaker leads during a minimally invasive surgical procedure (normally, this procedure is being done via an ‘open’ procedure). This project is executed in collaboration with the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG). The project has already resulted in a demonstrator device, which requires further development and optimization towards a series product and a clinical validation process.
The medical instrument is designed to place pacemaker electrodes in an accurate and efficient manner using a minimally invasive surgical procedure. The instrument is designed such that all required functions (navigating to the correct position on the heart wall, temporary fixation of the lead, analysis of the correct position by electrical measurement and final fixation of the pacemaker lead) are integrated in a single device and that these steps can be performed in a single workflow.
AssignmentThe demonstrator model of the delivery device requires multiple (mechanical) improvements before it becomes suitable for series manufacturing and clinical validation.
During this assignment you will be working on:
- drafting new system specifications based on the outcome of clinical tests and user feedback;
- all aspects of the mechanical design of an improved delivery device;
- realization and assembly of the delivery device and verification against the system requirements;
- validation of the device.
At the start of the internship, a concrete plan will be formulated to guarantee that the scope of the assignment is feasible within the available timeframe.
