Function description

As a Senior Biotech Breeder, you are responsible for the development and implementation of new breeding tools by connecting breeding and research.
You will learn to understand the need of the breeders and you are able to translate these needs into tools to be developed, ranging from marker development to (digital) phenotyping methods and analysis of complex data sets. You are able to formulate this tool development into multidisciplinary projects and to act as either a project lead or program manager of multiple projects.

At the same time you are aware of new biotechnology developments and you act as a sparring partner of our researchers in molecular biology, phytopathology, cell biology and plant physiology. You are able to translate technology into breeding opportunities.

You will chair the quarterly leafy meetings with breeding and research where you oversee all leafy biotech breeding projects and monitor the overall progress.

You will lead a team of four biotech breeders. You will be part of the Leafy Management team, that secures global alignment and coordination of all leafy breeding and technology development projects. The aim is an innovative and high quality range of leafy varieties for our customers. You will report to the Crop Research Director.

Function Requirements

You are passionate about working with plants. The strong communications, network and management skills you bring help you to build solid relations between all colleagues, in breeding and research, but also externally with universities and research institutes. You stimulate your team members to take their own responsibility.

You are aware of and interested in new bio-molecular techniques and identify new opportunities for the breeding team. You are a good listener, and know how to translate needs into actions. You come up with creative solutions fitting the situational needs. Your attitude is analytic and proactive.

You have experience with project management involving different parties.

In short, you:

• have 3-6 years experience in the field of genetics/plant breeding and biotechnology;
• are able to transfer (complex) technologies into user friendly tools;
• have managerial skills;
• have at least a MSc degree (for example in Plant Science or Biotechnology);
• have excellent communication skills in English, proficiency in Dutch is a pre.
