Over de werkgever

KU Leuven is an autonomous university. It was founded in 1425. It was born of and has grown within the Catholic tradition.
About the labs
The Laboratory for Genome Editing and System Genetics develops highly multiplexed CRISPR/Cas-based technologies for precision genome engineering in microbes.

We apply these technologies in the model eukaryote Saccharomyces cerevisiae to study complex eukaryotic genetics.
The Symbiotic and Pathogenic Interaction group studies diverse topics related to bacterial survival under stress conditions, from basic mechanisms to translational research.

Project

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated PhD student to develop improved high-throughput genome editing tools for bacteria, using E. coli as a model, for applications in systems and synthetic biology.

The project will be a joint PhD between the Laboratory for Genome Editing and System Genetics and the Symbiotic and Pathogenic Interaction group.

Profile

  • You have a Master’s degree in a relevant field (bioengineering, biotechnology, genetics).
  • You have acquired relevant practical experience with regard to the research lines of the groups, in particular CRISPR/Cas genome editing and/or microbiology.
  • You are capable of independently planning, executing and troubleshooting your daily work, and take an interest in driving your project, including identifying and proposing productive research directions.
  • You have a strong interest in our research lines, are highly motivated, friendly and supportive, and work well in a collaborative and international environment.
  • You have excellent verbal and written English communication skills. The working language is English.

Offer

We offer
  • A stimulating, diverse, and international research environment.
  • You will have the opportunity to take the lead on exciting research projects in the areas of CRISPR genome engineering and synthetic biology.
  • Access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, including robotics instrumentation and next-generation sequencing facilities.
  • Possibility for further training and education
