We look for an enthusiastic researcher to assist the IMAGE land team in data analysis and scenario studies.
The IMAGE model is a key instrument of PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency for scenario analyses of global environmental change in relation to future development of consumption and production of food and energy (www.pbl.nl/image). Regarding food, model research focuses on the agricultural system and land-use, land-based mitigation, nutrients and biodiversity. The model assesses the development of trend scenarios, but also explores response options to achieve global food security and prevent climate change while preserving biodiversity.
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher contributing to application of IMAGE’s modelling of the agricultural and land-use system. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills and enjoys working in a team. The position is available for 4 years, as a part-time function, to assist the IMAGE team in ongoing projects. We hope to find an individual, who favors to work on a part-time basis, in an inspiring and high-level working environment. Specifically, the researcher will contribute to scenario studies, data analysis, publications and possibly project management in the context of food and agricultural systems, land-based greenhouse gas mitigation, climate change and biodiversity protection.
For this you will work together with other researchers of the IMAGE model team, and with partners in The Hague and Wageningen (WUR), and Potsdam (PIK). You will contribute to publish work both in PBL reports and peer reviewed journals.
- You have an MSc in agro-economic or environmental sciences, or a related study in the natural sciences.
- You have strong analytical skills, and you are fast and flexible in becoming familiar with new skills
- You have experience with analysing large, often spatially explicit, datasets.
- You are able to read and modify model code (ideally Python, C, Fortran).
- You are conversant with the food and agricultural system and natural resource use, and you have a demonstrable quantitative understanding of these issues at the global scale.
- The position demands good writing skills in English.
- You have experience with conducting your own work, but you also function well as part of a team.
