Job description

We are looking for a cell biologist/molecular biologist at the level of (associate) professor and with the possibility of career track to full professorship.

The research of the department is focused on retinal forms of blindness that affect large numbers of patients, especially inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Our aim is to develop personalized treatment and prevention options using metabolomics, natural history studies and genetic profiles combined with imaging parameters, and artificial intelligence

.
Our ongoing research activities include genome-wide associations studies, development of eye-on-a-chip and patient-specific stem cell-derived retinal in vitro models, complement assays, and antisense oligonucleotide and CRISPR-cas9 technology.

Your research interacts with these activities and involves unraveling of disease mechanisms in IRDs and AMD on a molecular level, finding leads for disease interventions and prevention. Your research takes place in close collaboration with our ophthalmologists as well as other scientist of the Radboud University.

You will lead and develop a research group and represent our department in relevant forums and networks, both nationally and internationally. By doing so, you are a key player in raising research funds. You have an essential role in forming the bridge between our clinicians and scientists working at the cellular and/or molecular level. You will actively create liaisons and help to develop integrated research plans. You will also share your knowledge with our PhD- and master students and participate in developing new educational courses.

Your focus matches that of the department: to effectuate a lasting impact in the treatment of retinal eye disease.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Lead and expand a research group that is (inter)nationally renowned.
  • Ensure a stimulating research environment that motivates our researchers.
  • Connect molecular research with clinical ophthalmology.
  • Have a leading role in creating and maintaining scientific networks, both (inter)nationally and in the Radboud University.
  • Write National and International grant proposals and assist colleagues in writing proposals.
  • (Supervision of) writing scientific publications for international journals.
  • Present results at national and international meetings.

Our main focus of interest lies with the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases which accounts for over half of the patient care provided by the department. Our department is internationally renowned for its expertise on retinal disease. Examples are inherited retinal diseases, age-related macular degeneration, diabetes mellites and vitreoretinal surgery.

The department of Ophthalmology of the Radboud University Medical Center is a global leader in the field of multifactorial and genetic retinal eye diseases. Our scientific research lines matches the clinical focus and is directed at retinal disorders. We have an enthusiastic team of researchers who collaborate collaborating in several research lines. Our team includes 2 senior PI’s, 2 junior levels PI’s, one research fellow, 7 PhD students and 2 research technicians. The department has a large clinical trial center that currently houses over 35 trials. The department's research and clinical trials often target innovative treatment methods, such as gene therapy and RNA therapy.

  • In addition to your monthly salary and an annual vacation allowance of 8%, you will receive an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
  • If you work irregular hours, you will receive an allowance.
  • As a full-time employee (36 hours per week), you are entitled to approximately 168 vacation hours (over 23 days) per year.
  • Radboud university medical center pays 70% of the pension premium. You pay the rest of the premium with your gross salary.
